Body

2018

Made to believe to walk among the herd, we follow, copy, and believe whatever’s around without an ounce of doubt. The project began when I started asking myself, Where did it all go wrong? In an attempt to answer the question, I took a conscious look at my life and the lives of people around me, all of us in a race to match the standards set by people who benefit from our insecurities. Growing up exposed to images that cement the ‘ideal’ broke our sensibility somewhere—to see what’s real and not. ‘The ideal’ is a danger that pulls people in by falsely promising a better life.

The project aims to disrupt this trail of blindly conforming to ideas of beauty pushed towards us and take control over our bodies. The approach was to look at beauty along with the modern tools that have the power to dictate what and how beauty should be. The project is a combination of composed photographs of friends and myself. Photos are overlaid with texts and partly manipulated to depict the visual and ideological exchanges of popular culture.
